How to Knit

Lesson Two: The Backwards Loop Cast On

Lesson Two of my How to Knit series will focus on the Backwards Loop Cast On method. This method is a very beginner friendly and easier to pick up than the Long Tail Cast On.

While the Backwards Loop is easier to learn, the Long Tail has a neater finish.

Both the Backwards Loop and the Long Tail cast on both have their place in knitting. The Backwards Loop is a great method for adding on underarm stitches on a sweater.

To start the Backwards Loop method, the first step is the the Slip Knot. You can find instruction on how to create a Slip Knot here.

Next, you want to take your working yarn and make a simple loop, as if you are going to make a slip knot.

Now you will place your loop on your needle.

Here is another angle of that same step.

Now, pull your working yarn tight.

Congrats! You have created your first Backwards Loop. Now, just repeat until you reach your desired number of stitches.
